Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer of the mesothelium (the protective lining of many of the body’s internal organs) that is diagnosed in about 2,000 Americans each year. It affects more men than women, and the risk of developing mesothelioma increases with age.
Asbestos exposure is the primary risk factor for developing mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is caused by inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers. The three primary types of this cancer are pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, and pericardial mesothelioma, which affect the lining of the lungs, abdomen, and heart, respectively.
It can take decades following initial exposure to asbestos for mesothelioma to manifest, and many mesothelioma patients haven’t been around asbestos for 30 or 40 years or more. People who have worked with asbestos are in the highest risk group, although environmental and secondary exposure can also cause mesothelioma.
Treatment for mesothelioma can be difficult, but there are several options, including: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy, gene therapy, anti-angiogenesis drugs, and alternative therapies. Mesothelioma patients may also want to consider their options for pain management and palliative care.
